Legislative Action

P.L.A.Y.S. (Physical activity, Living healthy, Access, Youth development & Safety)

Help advance the PLAYS Act
Ask your Member of Congress to become a co-sponsor

Thank you to the more than 100 organizations that have already come out in support of the recently introduced bill to promote quality youth sports programs, the PLAYS Act (see below for list of supporting organizations - if your organization is not listed, please encourage them to support the bill and let us know of their support).

Last year, members of the National Council of Youth Sports took to Capitol Hill to discuss with Members of Congress the benefits of youth sports and how the federal government can partner with community groups and volunteers to promote quality youth sports and the enhances youth development and safety that would entail.

The fruits of those efforts, in the form of the Physical activity, Living healthy, Access, Youth development, and Safety (PLAYS) in Youth Sports Act, was introduced in late June of this year by Rep. Ron Kind (D-WI). See the list of co-sponsors below. You can find more about the bill at congress.gov and entering HR 2932 into the search field.

We need your help to increase the number of co-sponsors and advance this bill.

You can help in two ways:

Dear _____________

As someone who recognizes the positive benefits of youth sports participation and that, through even minor quality and safety improvements, our youth sports programs around the country, with a little bit of assistance, can have an even greater positive impact on our youth.

That is why I am asking you, as my representative in Congress, to co-sponsor HR 2932, the PLAYS in Youth Sports Act, introduced by Rep. Ron Kind.

The bill would:

  • Authorize funding to provide small funding assistance to local youth sports organizations to make quality program improvements that they would not otherwise be able to afford;
  • Encourage local and state governments to establish and implement model standards for promoting healthy and safe youth sports practices in their jurisdictions; and
  • Authorizing funding for studies and prevention methods around youth sports and health and safety.

The bill does NOT:

  • Appropriate funds (rather it authorizes use of existing funding)
  • Mandate youth sports organizations comply with any new federal requirements (just provides incentives for youth organizations to adopt standards encourage within the youth sport community)

I look forward to hearing of your co-sponsoring of the bill.
