Legislative Alert #8

Urge Your SENATORS to Support S. 2123

The U.S. Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee has scheduled CARA (Conservation and Reinvestment Act) S.2123 for "mark-up" consideration on June 14, 2000. With the CARA bill now passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, we in the youth sports community must now shift our attention to the Senate, where Senator May Landrieu (D-LA) has introduced companion legislation to H.R.701.

This Senate CARA bill S.2123, already has sixteen co-sponsors, including: Frank Murkowski (R-AK, Tim Hutchinson (R-AR), Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Joe Biden (D-DE), Max Cleland (D-GA), Evan Bayh (D-IN), John Breaux (D-LA), Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (R-MS), Thad Cochran (R-MS), John Ashcroft (R-MO), Christopher Bond (R-MO), Bob Smith (R-NH), Judd Gregg (R-NH), Michael DeWine (R-OH), Charles Robb (D-VA), John Warner (R-VA).

Our most immediate concern is getting S.2123 reported out of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, whose chairman, Senator Murkowski, has signaled his support as a co-sponsor.

We seek the help of all youth sports advocates in the following states to immediately contact their respective Senators and urge prompt consideration of S 2123. You may adapt the sample letter attached to this legislative alert if you wish.

It is important to contact all members of the U.S. Senate; however, here a list of a few targeted Senators:

ARKANSAS: Blanche Lincoln
COLORADO: Ben Nighthorse Campbell
FLORIDA: Bob Graham
HAWAII: Daniel Akaka
IDAHO: Larry Craig
ILLINOIS: Peter Fitzgerald
KENTUCKY: Jim Bunning
MONTANA: Conrad Burns
NEW MEXICO: Pete Domenici and Jeff Bingaman
NORTH DAKOTA: Byron Dorgan
OKLAHOMA: Don Nickles
OREGON: Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden
SOUTH DAKOTA: Tim Johnson
WASHINGTON: Slade Gorton
WYOMING: Craig Thomas

The sample letter "Senate Letter for Support of S.2123 - CARA" can be sent from this website.
